The Shadow is lifted from Mirkwood!

Smaug is dead, the Necromancer was driven out by the Council of the Wise, and the orcish hordes were broken at the Battle of Five Armies. While Mirkwood is still a dangerous place full of Spiders, Wights, Trolls, Goblins, and Wicked Men, for the first time in an Age, one can breathe the air of freedom under the forest eaves. Now is the time for the free peoples of Rhovannion to reclaim the Greenwood of old.

With Smaug slain and King Dain now lord under the mountain, the Men of Laketown are thriving. Bard has refounded Dale at the foot of the Lonely Mountain, and wealth flows forth from the mountain and down the rivers through Mirkwood. In the southern reaches of the wood, the Woodmen have pushed down the Black Tarn to reclaim lands long oppressed under the watchful eye of Dol Guldur, and bands of Men have returned to settle the East Bight. To the west, Beorn has opened his land to settlers who vie with Orcs and slavers from Viglund to control the Anduin Vales. Even the Woodland Realm of the Elves is opening to the world again.

You are an adventurer who has emerged to claim fortune and glory in this time of new opportunities. You may be a hero of your people or a scurrilous rogue seeking self-enrichment. Either way, your deeds will shape Mirkwood as it emerges from the Shadow into the dawn of a new Age.
